The design of spatial building structures in modern software systems requires the use of numerical methods capable of accounting for the physical and geometric non-linearities of materials. One of the most complex tasks in this process is the correct modeling of the interaction between the structure and the soil environment, the reliability of which depends on the accuracy of the specified physical and mechanical parameters of the base. Soil is a discrete medium with a significant manifestation of internal friction, the deformation laws of which depend on the magnitude of the average compressive stress. Standard laboratory techniques, such as compression in a rigid holder or testing in classical stabilometers, have technical limitations and often do not allow determining the non-linear deformation characteristics required for modern non-linear calculation models with sufficient accuracy.
The article theoretically substantiates a comprehensive methodology of parallel testing of discrete media to establish the parameters of non-linear deformation models. To find elastic characteristics, in particular the deformation modulus and Poisson's ratio, the combined use of compression and loading of a thick-walled cylindrical sample with internal radial pressure is applied. The developed approach to the study of plastic deformation regularities ensures the independent variation of principal stresses while maintaining the constancy of the average compressive stress.
The proposed loading regime eliminates the shortcomings of traditional triaxial compression devices and makes it possible to obtain a family of deformation curves. The combination of these curves describes a single deformation surface in the stress-strain space. The use of the characteristics determined by this methodology as input data for computer-aided design systems opens the way to a significant increase in the reliability of numerical modeling of the joint behavior of building structures with a soil base.
