The article examines a conceptual approach to the architectural and design organization of public spaces along urban waterfronts. The relevance of the study is determined by the considerable recreational and urban planning potential of waterfront areas, which often remain functionally limited and lack a coherent architectural and artistic identity. The aim is to analyze Ukrainian and international experience in waterfront public space development and to substantiate the importance of a conceptual approach in achieving integrated functional, spatial, and aesthetic solutions.
The study considers the specific characteristics of waterfronts within the urban structure, including their linear configuration, pedestrian movement patterns, and dependence on attractive destinations at key access points. These factors influence visitor flows, the functional organization of the territory, and the effectiveness of public space. Particular attention is given to the relationship between the initial design concept and its implementation, as inconsistencies during project realization may significantly diminish the quality of the intended environment.
The analysis of the Lopanska Embankment in Kharkiv reveals that the lack of a clearly articulated and consistently implemented concept contributed to limitations in functional planning and aesthetic quality. The loss of key landscape and design elements, insufficient greenery, and the absence of comfortable conditions for different activities have reduced the site's attractiveness in everyday use. In contrast, the Simcoe WaveDeck waterfront in Toronto demonstrates the benefits of a unified design concept. Its wave-inspired architectural image integrates spatial planning, materials, landscape elements, and multifunctional facilities, creating an adaptable and inclusive public environment for users of different ages and interests.
The findings confirm that a conceptual approach is essential to the successful architectural and design organization of urban waterfronts. A clearly defined concept provides a common basis for functional planning, spatial composition, and artistic expression, ensuring the integrity and distinctiveness of the resulting environment. Consistent implementation of the concept throughout all project stages can improve the usability, comfort, and attractiveness of waterfront public spaces and strengthen their role in urban life.
