Abstract

This research focuses on the Ukrainian medical textile sector, highlighting its transformation under the pressure of wartime conditions and a strong dependence on foreign supplies. The work investigates patterns in the import of medical textile products, evaluates changes in public procurement practices, and outlines major global market tendencies influencing this segment. The findings indicate that critical reliance on imports is most evident in the category of nonwoven fabrics—such as spunbond, meltblown, and multilayer SMS/SMMS materials—as well as in specialized functional coatings.

In addition, the study reviews contemporary approaches to textile treatment that enhance performance characteristics, including antimicrobial protection, barrier efficiency, and filtration capacity. These improvements are largely achieved through the integration of nanotechnology-based components and advanced polymer compositions. Despite current challenges, the analysis confirms that Ukraine retains industrial capabilities suitable for the production of nonwoven materials, which may serve as a basis for expanding domestic output in the medical field, provided that modern finishing technologies are adopted.

The results support the argument for strengthening local manufacturing of medical textiles as a strategic step toward minimizing import dependence. This can be accomplished through technological renewal and innovation-driven development of existing enterprises. The conclusions of the study may contribute to policy-making and strategic planning aimed at reinforcing the national textile industry and ensuring a stable supply of essential materials for healthcare needs.
